Because sometimes, food is #bae

Welcome to the beginning. Food for Yummies is a first stop for home cooks, ”wanna be” home cooks, and “have to be” home cooks to find tips, recipes and ways to be inspired and encouraged in the kitchen. I guide you through all of the yummy parts of life in a budget friendly and easy to understand way.

This blog is about “fooding” and I coin that phrase instead of using eating, because there is more that goes into a meal than shoving food in your mouth and digesting it. I have always had a passion for eating, and throughout my twenties, I am discovering the creativity, robustness and the  daily struggle bus of cooking for one’s self. Fooding involves preparation, shopping, smelling, prepping, cooking, serving, washing, drying, burping, and doing it all again.

My mother was one of those who had a small family (there were 4 of us) but was always cooking for those “just in case” people that mayyyybee would come over. No this would happen…probably on a Sunday, but if she was making a spice cake and word got out, even a Tuesday was up for game. I grew up with smells. The magic of the kitchen would waft its way to my nose often, and I have a cabinet full of memories that are triggered by just a single smell. When I moved out on my own for the first time at college off campus, I tried to recreate the smells that my mother seemingly effortlessly would create at the drop of a dime. I found it was not so simple, and there are literally thousands of Sprint minutes logged from NYC to Chicago of my mom explaining recipes to me on the phone while I shouted ather that I didn’t know how much “a little bit” was!

Fast forward, we worked through it, and many nasty dishes later that have since been *almost* perfected, I stand today a confident cook, and avid eater. Fooding is my happy place, and I want to share the ins and outs of it with you all. Because I know it can be hard, I know many don’t have someone they can call, and I know that the first time you go shopping by yourself and you see the bill and realize how your bank account is setup,….it ain’t gon’ work!
